Fitzpatrick on Mass Effect 2

I decided a few days back that since I was such an avid fan of the game that I would post a review of it.

For those who are not familure, Mass Effect is a Video Game Scifi Epic that takes place a few
hundred years in the future from our current day. Mixing the genres of RPG and Shooter this game is
incredibly dynamic.

In this current day and age of video games and technology the world has opened up to make these “Movie” like games. Not just in graphics but in writing and acting as well. In Mass Effect and its sequel many well known actors have been the voices of characters such as Seth Green (The Ships Pilot), Keith David, Marina Sirtis, Martin Sheen, Michael Doorn, and many more. With that level of voice acting it makes the story much more rich and believable.

I am not intending on filling in too many plot details in the interest of not spoiling the story. If you have
not played the first game though, you will have a hard time following the second. The game in based around choices which effect future encounters, characters, and the story itself. This is one of the things that sucked me into the game so much and kept me in front of my 360 for endless nights till I completed it (then replayed it). The choices you make also effect your Paragon (good guy) or Renegade (badass) rating. As you gain more in one of the other, new conversation and quick actions will open. For example, getting to punch out a manipulative reporter because you don’t like what she did to you in the first game (for renegade) or keeping a crew member from killing someone and showing forgiveness (for paragon).

In Mass Effect 2 the combat systems and inventory were greatly improved over the first game. One of the major issues in ME1 was maintaining your inventory (which was constantly filling full of useless crap), in ME2 the inventory was completely removed and all weapons were added to research and types of ammo added to skills. In addition the ability wheel which was slow to access in ME1 has been assigned to hotbuttons so you can trigger abilities without freezing combat. Making combat more fun and interesting. The introduction of thermal clips was also added which is a universal ammunition for all your guns. It works out much better than the heat system from ME1.

The developers have also added something they call the “Cerberus Network” which gives you a news feed of what is happening in this fictional world as well as the ability for DLC as they add it to the game. So far they have added the Normandy Crash site, Zaeed, and the Cerberus Armor set. Much more is slated for release soon such as the Hammerhead (vehicle) missions.

If you are interested in flying around space, blowing things up, and getting sucked into an epic story line
that would rival cult scifi novals such as Dune then this is your game. It was defiantly mine. And after
completing this, I am ready for the third to see what happens. I guess its time to restart the game on
the hardest mode.
