Fitzpatricks top 15 songs of all time… IMHO

Fitzpatrick’s Top 15 Songs of all time

Last week I was working on some projects and the eternal music question arose in my head. Whenever people ask me “What is your favorite song?” or “Favorite band/artist?” I am not totally sure how to respond. So I thought about that for a while, and this is a fairly accurate list of my favorite songs of all time. Spanning my wide yet specific musical taste.

For the songs people may not know I have added links. Some of the videos I don’t care for the video at all, just listen to the music. And wow, there are a lot of lame videos with good songs put over them.

In Almost no particular order:

1.Hybrid - Dog Star

The all new Harmony Network Webcast

Harmony Network is a live web stream I have played on for almost 10 years now (wow its been that long?). They have recently relaunched their website with a flash player and blog roll instead of the old static website. Be sure to check it out!

Here is a little rundown of the Harmony Networks:

Live or Archive, in the background while you’re working or partying, it’s five hours, five dj’s, including your host, Ralph Lindstrom. Every Wednesday night, you can watch our webcast, live from the studios of Harmony Productions. Each hour it’s a different dj, with the styles of music ranging from house to breaks, trance to drum&bass, some hip hop, but nothing mainstream – at least, not in our area! Some dj’s love all the camera angles on what they’re doing, and others wish we’d just keep the groovy graphics on the screen for their whole set. It’s always different, usually interesting, and just like clockwork since 1999. In fact, in October, it will have been TEN years of NEVER missing a Wednesday night — except the first one each July, when we are verrrry far out of town. We make it up two days later on July 4th, with our annual BYOB (Bring Your Own Bass) parking lot party. In case you miss it Wednesday night, you can watch the next morning at work.. Check out our archives – the last two years are on there for you to enjoy at your own pace. Haircuts and colors have come and gone, but Ralph Lindstrom, your host, looks exactly the same! Enjoy the show!

Mortal – Enfleshed (The Word is Alive) Fitzpatrick Remix

Mortal - Enfleshed (The Word Is Alive) Fitzpatrick Remix

Many of you might not know about this band but back in the 90’s there was a mostly rock driven industrial band called Mortal. They released 5 albums in the 90’s (Lusis, Fathom, Wake, Pura, and Mortal) and one addition on in the past few years.

Some people also know them from the “Rift” video that was aired for quite a while on MTV that dealt with the issue of child abuse. Mortal mainly toured the Christian circuit of venues because of their beliefs and direction. After Mortal the two main members Jyro Xhan and Jerome Fontamillas moved on to other projects. Jerome Fontamillas later became the keyboard player for the well known rock band “Switchfoot” (who wrote the song that goes… “we were made to live for so much more, but we lost ourself).

Mortal has been of my biggest influences musically esp in my early days of production when I did industrial / synthpop type music. But they never cease to keep my interest even 15 years later.

The track I decided to remix is off their first album and actually the first song. It is called Enfleshed (The Word is Alive). The album containing this song was released in 1992 and my remix is an extended mix perfect for djs. Enjoy!

Fitzpatrick – World of Warcraft – Ulduar Video

In my spare time from working on electronic music I am one of the 11 million players of WOW (aka World of Warcraft). Here is a short video I put together of my guild entering the new raid area Ulduar. We have only cleared about half of it so far but its been a blast. The track is one of my own that I wrote sometime last year but never actually released it. Bosses included in this video Ignis the Furnace Master, The Iron Counsel, Kolagarn, and Auriaya. Most likely I will make a part two video to this, but who knows. :) Good times either way.

Enjoy!

Producers and Song Writers

Producers and Song Writers.

Two terms that get confused often in the electronic music world is the term “Producer” and “Song Writer”. I thought I would take a moment to explore these terms.

In most genres outside electronic music you will have someone who writes the music, maybe even a band that performs the music but then in the studio someone that produces the music. This person punches it up, and helps the writer to make it better than before. Maybe that is just cutting down the track, adding a part or changing out some words in the track. Simply put, they are the overall supervisor or the track.

Although in electronic music many of the song writers are also the producers. Like myself for example. I come up with the idea from scratch, write all the parts, record them, trim it all down, trouble shoot issues, and engineer the music. Now, after the track is written, recorded and produced I send mine over to a close associate (Jacksin) for the mastering process. It is ALWAYS best to have someone else do the mastering of your track. You need a fresh set of ears to put the finalizing touches to your works.

If your a dj interested in getting into music production or song writing, keep one thing in mind. Music production requires a knowledge of music. Who would have thought right? Now as you learn to tie sounds together to make beats or bass lines remember that harmonics and keys are part of it as well. I cannot tell you how often I speak with people who are “producers” but are absolutely tone deaf. Now I’ve heard some impressive material from people that are tone deaf but most of it tends to be more rhythm driven (which is all good too). But personally, I would encourage you to pick up a midi keyboard of some kind and either look up some online tutorials on music theory or grab yourself a book. Simple knowledge of chords, rhythms, and structure goes a long way. That and also, if you are wanting to work on writing tracks in a certain genre, find a track you REALLY like and do whatever you can to recreate some of the sounds in it. In doing that you will learn the process for creating it.

happy creating!
